What are Crochet Braid Patterns?

Although we say crochet braids as referring to the hair, we are talking about the method of attaching the hair. Crochet braiding (or rather the ‘crochet method’) is a way to add extensions to your hair. Like a weave, the primary method is to twist your hair and then attach the wings to the corners. However, unlike weaves, the hair used is loose and not woven. Sewn-in, the saffron hair is looped under the cornrow with a crochet needle (basically a hook) and secured with a sort of knot.

Crochet’s hair is usually installed use synthetic hair; However, over the years, more expensive human hair brands have become more mainstream. They are available at almost any Black Beauty store (online orders included).

It’s best to start with washed, conditioned, and blow-dried hair. After braiding, the natural or loose hair is braided into cornrows tailored to the specific hairstyle. The process is very similar to weaving until the hair is set. They are packaged like box knitting bundles, but crochet hair comes in pre-braided or pre-looped packs.

How to Create the Perfect Crochet Braid Pattern

Pre-looped or bay-braided hair is usually more expensive because it offers flatter and softer-looking styles versus hand-made loops. Plus, it’s much easier for a stylist to work with versus manual looping.

The hair is carefully kept in true cookie style and is pulled with a hook under each section of cornrow until the entire head is covered.

Crochet braids allow the scalp to breathe and have the added bonus of traditional box braids and a variety of hair textures that usually only come in wig or weave form, making the final look more natural.
