Lanugo is a soft, downy hair that covers the body of a fetus or newborn. It is the first hair to be formed by the fetal hair follicles, and it usually comes around 16 weeks of gestation and is abundant by week 20. It is usually shed before birth, around 7 or 8 months of pregnancy, but is sometimes present at birth. Lanugo disappears on its own within a few weeks. Lanugo can be a sign of malnutrition or an eating disorder in adults. When a person does not have enough body fat to keep them warm, the body may produce Lanugo to insulate itself.
